A tense, terrifying, melancholic and suffocating fantasy thriller with shades of a ghost story
Chronology
Emma follows a child on her journey to learn to communicate with a girl, Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermit’s den for centuries, so she tries to convince Carol, a skeptical medium, to help her. A supernatural thriller full of scary actions, emotions, chills and a lot of scares; However, some are confusing and inexplicable, the causes of some scary events are never well explained. The film presents a fictional story of a social reality that has struck a small town. It begins with a seemingly historical prologue about a plague epidemic, a chapel where the sick are locked up, and a regiment of beaked birdmen, but it is a re-enactment of a parade as part of a small town’s annual festival, when the chapel, believed to be haunted by Little Usoa, opens for a short time.
A tense and mysterious film, full of emotion, suspense, chills, false clues, scary twists
It follows Emma (Maia Zaitegi) as she learns to communicate with a girl, Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermit’s den for centuries, so she tries to get Carol (Belén Rueda), a skeptical and fake medium, to help her. The latter carries wounds from her childhood, when her perhaps true psychic mother was more interested in the ghost of a local girl than her own daughter. It’s an acceptable, relatable film, with many not always sympathetic, deeply human and relatable main characters. It’s a haunted film that carries an unsettling horror and sinister atmosphere when the menacing creatures appear.
A fascinating drama whose interest wanes as the tiresome accumulation of supposedly terrifying elements increases
Step by step, the mystery begins to unfold until its surprising conclusion, resulting in a sentimental ghost story, with serious, brooding tones in the style of The Orphanage or Pan’s Labyrinth, but with a specific female focus. While Cerdita focuses on pure horror in La Ermita, several things confirm that Pereda is a key figure in today’s horror and fantasy genres. One is his frontal entry into genre cinema: he bets on fantasy without hesitation, adding some personal drama. As the shooting progresses, he lets it down and prevents us from talking about a gem like Cerdita.
In the end, it was a decent and decent film, but nothing remarkable
However, Pereda manages to make a film that is more than worthy, but weaker than the previous one. Pereda has a great eye for the Gothic, enjoys the trappings of Spanish horror, although he does not actually make horror films. The lead actress Belén Rueda gives a good performance in her usual style, an actress specialized in mystery and horror films such as: Juliet’s Eyes, Orphanage, You Don’t Sleep, Under the Storm, Pactum, Orbita 9 and Body A. In fact, Belén Rueda is the closest thing Spain has to a horror heroine or a “Scream Queen”, she pairs well with the prodigy Maia Zaitegi, who evokes the young Ana Torrent in Cria Cuervos or El espiritu de la colmena (In the Spirit of the Beehive).
The film is professionally directed by Carlota Pereda, who is clearly a talented writer and filmmaker
As a female drama with a similar tone to the genre, this is the second solid showcase of Pereda’s talent. It won the 2023 Sitges Film Festival: Official Feature Film Section (out of competition) and 2023: Goya Awards (Spain): Nominated for Best Special Effects. Its first film was the much better ¨Cerdita¨, starring Carlota Pereda, winner of the Goya Award for Best Short Film, winner of the Goya Award for Best Short Film in 2018, and starring Laura Galán. Rating: 5.5/10.
